Ellie Cullman, the 2016 recipient of the New York School of Interior Design’s Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award, founded Cullman & Kravis over 30 years ago. Known for layered, dynamic interiors, luxurious finishes and exquisite details, C&K’s work embraces a “modern traditional” aesthetic. This fresh approach is contemporary, yet respects the 30-year track record of the company’s passion for fine art and antiques. Ellie is the co-author with Tracey Pruzan of Decorating Master Class: The Cullman Kravis Way, The Detailed Interior: Decorating Up Close with Cullman & Kravis, and From Classic to Contemporary: Decorating with Cullman & Kravis.

MEET ELLIE:

I am EMPOWERED by: My amazingly talented colleagues.

I am INSPIRED by: Travel, especially in the Far East.

I am ENAMORED by: Custom embroidery and mint chocolate chip ice cream.

I first fell in love with design: When Bob Stern designed my first home.

On top of my wish list for my home: An Anish Kapoor sculpture.

My favorite hotel: The Tawaraya Ryokan (inn) in Kyoto, Japan.

Every morning I: Watch Morning Joe on the elliptical, and read the New York Post (before The New York Times, to be honest) with my cappuccino.

Best advice you ever got as a designer: Never rest until the good is better and the better is best.
